Summer Skills Courses

2017–2018

We are pleased to offer three summer skills courses in English and mathematics. Students come to SWCHS from many different educational backgrounds and all with unique individual educational experiences. This results in students starting their freshmen year (or joining our sophomore–senior classes) at many varying levels. While most students have no difficulty adjusting to the rigors of SWCHS coursework, we have found that some students are lacking in some of the foundational skills that we assume they have and that are needed to be maximally successful. In response, our teachers have often had to slow down, and sometimes even “back up” to shore up these skills for those students that are lacking them. The impact on the courses taught over the school year is that less can get accomplished overall, and the time spent is not optimally productive for those students that were already proficient in those skills.

We have designed these courses to “level the playing field.” Each course is uniquely designed by the instructors to prepare the students enrolled in them for maximum success in the next level course.  While the content of the course may already be fairly set in place, each instructor will assess the proficiency level of the students enrolled, and then work with the class as a whole, and each individual student as needed, to get them ready for a terrific year at SWCHS. Although it might not be what your student thinks of as his/her first choice for a summer activity, we trust that you and your student will find it a valuable experience and well worth it in the long run!
