Southwest Christian believes in the importance of gaining an understanding of the many creative abilities given to each of us by our Creator and the importance of developing these abilities.

From learning the fundamentals of art, to experimenting with various materials and elements of design, our visual arts program allows students to develop an appreciation of art and to express their creative talents.

Articulate, the annual art show in the spring, highlights the work from many of these classes as well as the literary/art publication, Poiema, which showcases both art and creative writing.

2019 Summer Workshops

Intro to Ceramics Studio | Grades 5–8
This is a workshop is for complete beginners! You will learn various hand-building techniques in clay as well as how to use the potter’s wheel. Learning about glaze application will result in beautiful finished one of a kind work! All supplies and firing are covered in the class fee.

  • Mondays & Wednesdays | June 17–26 | 9–11:30 a.m.
  • Tuesdays & Thursdays | June 18–27 | 9–11:30 a.m.

Open Ceramics Studio | Grades 9–12
This session is open to artists with previous experience with clay. You should be able to work without instruction and have a knowledge of a working ceramics studio. Come with your own projects in mind! Assistance will be given as needed. Additionally, experience and knowledge in wedging, wheel throwing, hand building, and glazing is required. All supplies and the firing of works will be included in the class fee.

  • Tuesdays | June 18–July 16 | Noon–3 p.m.

Draw. Paint. Print. | Grades 6–12
Real life observation drawing! Studying up close the wildflowers, trees and plants right in the backyard of SWCHS. Plan to learn techniques with pencil, color pencil, ink and watercolor! We will also use traditional printmaking techniques to make limited edition prints from your very own sketches! Nature will serve as an inspiration for your work! All levels welcome! All supplies covered in the class fee.

Illustrative Hand Lettering | Grades 9–12
If you love hand lettering this is the workshop for you! We will explore a variety of lettering techniques, learn the anatomy of letters and all things handwritten. Learn to create your own style using a variety of pens and ink. Maybe you will be the next sign-maker, typeface creator or book cover designer! All supplies are covered in the class fee.
