DECA Students Prepare for Competition
Published January 23, 2019
Southwest Christian High School’s first-year DECA chapter is heading to competition on Sunday, January 27 at Wayzata High School. DECA originally started with 38 students at the beginning of the school year, and 23 of them are choosing to compete at District competitions.
SWCHS was added to District VI this year which includes the following high schools: Eden Prairie, Orono, Wayzata, Chaska, Chanhassen, St. Louis Park, and Hopkins. Hundreds of students from District VI will be competing on Sunday’s competition. With over 40 competition categories, the top seven students in each category will advance to State Competition on March 3-5 in downtown Minneapolis. SWCHS students will be competing in the following categories: marketing, entrepreneurship, personal finance, and employment interviews.
“This has been challenging year of learning all that DECA encompasses, but it has been so rewarding watching our students deepen their business knowledge and refine their presentation skills,” said advisor Emily Robertson. “It’s such an awesome group of kids who genuinely want to continue improving and growing together.” Emily Robertson, marketing director, and Katie Larson, school counselor and former DECA student, started this program to continue growing business opportunities for SWCHS students. “Regardless of how they do in competition, to be able to launch this program at SWCHS is an amazing first step for growth in their overall business skills. It’s another incredible leadership opportunity to prepare them for college and beyond.”
This year’s chapter is lead by President Britta Carlson, Vice President Lauren Burke, and District Representative Robby Pettit.
