High Altitude Balloon Launches Into Near Space
Published February 10, 2020
The Southwest Christian STEM department launched their high altitude balloon into near space on Friday, February 7. The project was funded by an MISF grant awarded to Southwest Christian last year.
The group of students were under the leadership of Dr. Thor Benson as they worked on their balloon as part of an elective class offered at SWCHS last spring.
The balloon was launched in the SWCHS parking lot at 9:30 a.m. with a GoPro attached to record its journey to near space before the balloon exploded at approximately 80,500 feet (see image).
The group of students tracked the balloon’s coordinates and retrieved it as a group, as it descended down to Dundas, Minnesota, 48 miles southwest of the high school.
